2022 Season Opens at Concordia
The Roughriders opened their 2022 indoor season at the Cobber Indoor with a win, records knocked down, and 21 of the 31 athletes scoring points. For a first meet of the season with many new athletes to a track meet, the Riders performed very well. With a total of 104 points, they were able to pull ahead at the end of the meet to take the lead after battling with Central in points throughout the day. The Riders’ points came from a 4th place finish, two 1st, 5th, and 6th place finishes, three 8th place finishes, four 2nd place finishes, five 7th place finishes, and six 3rd place finishes. A 41-year record and a 3-year record both went down on Saturday. They were taken down by Elijah Dafoe in his freshman indoor debut. Elijah beat the long-standing freshman 800 indoor split record of 2:10.5 run by Tom Smith in 1981 by 1.4 seconds. He also took down fellow teammate Hunter McHenry’s freshman 3200-meter record by 5.08 seconds bringing it down to 10:27.70. Other notable performances were Carter Byron bringing home 15.50 points, Hunter McHenry winning two events, one individual, the other a relay, Caleb Severson leading the sprinters with the highest place finish in the 55-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. James Walters, a freshman as the highest placing thrower of the day, Hudson Flom the highest pole vault placer of the day, as well as all other members of the team who set new personal bests in their first meet ever. Not to be overlooked is the team’s potential depth in the 4×4, placing 4 teams in the top 8.
