Records Fall at Region Meet
Despite persistent cold and wind, two longstanding school records were broken at the East Region Meet Saturday. Buoyed by these performances, some surprising sprint relays, and the right arm of Logan Arason, the Riders cruised to a third-place team finish. Projected to score 94 points in the pre-meet phantom finish, the boys outperformed their seeds and totaled 106 points on the day. A great overall team effort in less than ideal conditions.

Mythical 4×8 Record Goes Down (8 pts)
For the past 46 years, Roughrider D-Krew members have been trying to break 8 minutes in the 4×8 and match the legendary quartet of Claude Smith, Mark Nelson, Marty Scofield, and Bob Newark, who ran a converted 7:56.54 in 1976. At the time, that was the first team in state history to break 8 minutes. That feat was finally bettered Saturday with an incredible performance from a dedicated group of distance runners. The team of seniors Hunter McHenry, Dameon Zenawick, Tanner Schiller, and junior Jonah Dafoe not only broke 8 minutes, they set a new school record at 7:55.41. Shockingly, the team didn’t even win the race, as an equally talented West Fargo squad nipped them at the line to cross in 7:55.22. Both teams rank 1-2 in the state and look to battle again in Bismarck.
School Record 4×8 Splits:
- McHenry-1:57.6 (#6 All-Time)
- Zenawick-1:59.2
- Schiller-2:01.9
- J Dafoe-1:56.7 (#3 All-Time)
McHenry Gets Redemption in Two-Mile (12 pts)
At the Howard Wood Dakota Relays, Hunter came within one second of breaking the 3200m school record of 9:28.01 (held by Jeremy Waller since 1986). In a gutsy effort Saturday, Hunter ran 9:26.05 to finish in 2nd place and get his long-desired school record. Zenawick also managed a nice PR in 4th place (9:44.56). The other Riders in the race placed 10-12 with two PR’s.
10. 9 Elijah Dafoe 10:39.22a Red River
11. 10 David Radke 10:41.66a PR Red River 12. 11 Jake Jenkins 10:42.94a PR Red River |
Arason Piles Up 25 Points
Junior Logan Arason was the pre-meet favorite in both the JT and the DT. He delivered in both events, even adding a little drama in each, just to make things interesting. He also placed 4th in the SP to round out the day.
Javelin-15 points
Arason placed 1st (164’5), winning by four inches over Ethan Manock from Wahpeton. Not seeded to score, junior javelin newcomer Quinn Nelson hit 150’5 to place 5th and qualify for state. Freshman JB Walters, also not projected to score, placed 8th with a PR throw of 143’11. Also in the results:
15. 11 Hudson Kilgore 125-09 Red River |
Discus-10 points
Logan added some suspense with fouls on his first two throws. He managed a fair mark on his third and ended the day with a 160’8 toss. Also in the results:

4×100 (8 points)
Seeded 4th, the team of Mason Reynolds, Severson, Gannon Brooks, and Mikey Mallory ran a blistering 43.79 to place 2nd and turn some heads in the EDC sprint world. The performance ranks #3 All-Time in school history. Considering the temperature, the result was especially impressive.
4×200 (6 points)
Another tremendous result was the team of Reynolds, Severson, Brooks, and Byron racing to 1:31.15 and a 3rd place finish. Seeded 6th and three seconds slower, the team surprised many onlookers, although not necessarily the athletes or the coach. This specific group had never run together before. They sit #9 All-Time in school history.
4×400 (4 points)
Two Grants (Lelm and Hoffarth) came to the rescue as substitutes in the 4×4. They joined with Schiller and Lukas Heydt to place an unexpected 5th place out of the slow heat. They finished in 3:38.06.

800m
No Riders placed in the 800, although four PR’s were achieved by four underclassmen. The well does not appear to be dry for the middle distance core in the coming years.

Triple Jump (4 points)
For the second year in a row, senior Simon Haug waited until the EDC Meet to qualify for State. Some people just like to make it interesting. He jumped 40’7.5 to place 6th. Freshmen Isaiah Gaye placed 8th with 40’1.5. Also in the results:
11. 11 Lukas Heydt 39-02.50 Red River
15. 10 Ben Strand 38-04.00 Red River 22. 10 Carson Blegen 36-00.50 Red River |
Pole Vault (2 points)
Junior Hudson Flom found himself in the unlucky position of 7th place Saturday, meaning he did not qualify for state. He cleared 12’0 along with five other athletes, so it came down to misses. Jack Kouba was 14th at 10’6, while freshman Max Martens made spirited attempts to clear the opening height of 10’0 (above his PR), to no avail. All look to return with a vengeance in 2023.
High Jump
Unfortunately, no Riders made the opening height of 5’6. All four athletes (Pearce Parks, Ben Strand, Isaac Schall, Mbanzendore Urbain) did make solid attempts, however.
