Riders win Dual over GFC
The Red River boys won the annual RR vs. GFC Dual Track and Field Meet Friday. The win marks the eighth straight victory in Grand Forks’ annual battle for high school track supremacy. The all-time standings now sit 8-5 in favor of Red River. The meet has been held every season since 2001, with the exception of 2008 and 2011, when it was canceled due to weather.
Strength in numbers was the key for the Riders, which used quality depth in all events areas to overwhelm the Knights at this year’s Dual. Less than ideal windy conditions hampered many of the events Friday, but nonetheless some great efforts were seen all around. State Qualifying performances were achieved on nine occasions as athletes earned trips to the ND State Meet in Bismarck at the end of May. Devon Pope led the RR charge with 32.5 points scored across three individual 1st-Place finishes and one relay victory. Other high scorers included Tyler Enerson, Alex Holmes, Kassim Nsibirwa, Mo Kamara, Peter Wysocki, Ty Boucher, and Carter Buelow who all scored over 20 points in their respective events.
Pope’s eye-opening 44’3 mark in the triple jump is the top jump in North Dakota thus far in 2016 and #4 All-Time at RRHS. Also punching his ticket to Bismarck was freshman Carlos Horcacitas with a 42’ jump.
In the first 110m Hurdle race of the season, Wysocki (15.04), Kamara (15.24), and Enerson (15.44) all used some favorable tailwinds to post fantastic early season times and qualify for a trip to Bismarck. Wysocki and Enerson posted lifetime PR’s. Parker Wenzel, Carlos Horcacitas, Holmes, and Daniel Pierce all ran PR’s to complete a 1-7 finish for RR.
The 4x100m Relay quartet of Kamara, Nsibirwa, Wenzel, and Pope used crisp baton passing to post a State Qualifying 45.15 time. Nsibirwa also ran a PR 23.14 in the 200m to qualify in his first individual race of 2016.
Pierce, who already qualified in the javelin throw earlier this season, bested his previous best by nearly 10 feet and threw 181’7. The mark moves him to #9 All-Time at tradition rich “Javelin High School.”
After most of the meet’s athletes and fans had went home, Holmes had just started his pole vault warm-ups. By the time the meet was over, Holmes had cleared 12’6 and qualified for the state meet.
The Riders are in action at home again on Tuesday for the Grand Forks Sertoma.
