Riders Debut at Cobber Indoor
The Red River Track and Field team made their annual trek to Concordia College’s Olson Forum for the traditional season opener, the Cobber Indoor.
Senior Tyler Enerson led all Roughriders with 30 points, picking up two victories (55mH-7.85/LJ-20’10.5) and two runner-up finishes (HJ-6’0/4×400).
Senior Devon Pope and sophomore Carlos Horcacitas-Martin, the top two returning triple jump athletes in ND, did not disappoint in their 2017 debut. Both posted eye-popping marks, with Carlos (45’1) edging Devon (44’9). Both marks are indoor PR’s, with Carlos setting a new overall PR and breaking the sophomore class record (previously held by Devon). Both athletes scored 26.5 points at the meet, with Carlos placing 2nd in the LJ (20’7), 3rd in the 55m Hurdles (8.80), and anchoring the victorious 4x200m Relay. Devon also won the 55m (6.85), placed 3rd in the HJ (5’10), and ran second leg on the 4x200m Relay.
Senior Peter Wysocki also had a strong meet, earning 18 points by placing second in both the 55m (6.89) and 55m Hurdles (8.15), and posting the fastest 4×400 split for the all-senior team, which placed second.
Other event winners included Cole Stenseth, who placed first in the 1600m in 4:58.77 and Kishen Patel, who won the pole vault with a PR height of 12’3. This is remarkable, considering he cleared 7’6 in his first ever track meet one year ago at the 2016 Cobber Indoor. The lone relay win came in the 4x200m, where Tyler Burian, Devon, Riley Benson, and Carlos raced to an impressive 1:36.35 time.
The Roughriders posted depth in all event areas and saw a huge amount of PR’s, great efforts, and impressive performances, especially from newcomers. With the boys and the girls teams placing first overall, the 2017 season looks to be an exciting one for RRHS!
Right around the corner on Monday and Tuesday is the highly-anticipated intrasquad competition, the Delmore Decathlon. The next indoor meet will be the NDSU State Indoor, held on Friday, March 24th.
