State Meet Closes 2019 Season
Enerson Grows Older and Better at State Meet
With the conclusion of the State Meet, held on Friday and Saturday in Bismarck, the 2019 high school track and field season is officially over for the Roughriders. Rain fell off and on for most of the day Friday. Despite the conditions, junior Bryce “Birthday Boy” Enerson came ready to compete. He started the day off with a PR in the 300 hurdle prelims, winning his heat (41.15) and qualifying for the finals. In the 110 hurdle prelims, he pushed the defending state champion from Bismarck High to the wire, crossing the line in a huge PR of 14.76 seconds. On the All-Time lists, that performance shot him past his older brothers Tyler (14.88) and Ryan (14.81), who are both decathletes at NDSU. Additionally, he moved ahead of former teammate Peter Wysocki (14.98) and RR Track legend Jeremy Zimney (14.79). He now sits an impressive #6 in school history. To cap off his birthday, he ran a tremendous anchor leg in the 4×100 to qualify the Riders for the finals. Teaming with seniors Zack Topping and Austin Oehlke, as well as classmate Ethan Brandvold, the quartet clocked 44.41 seconds, which was a SB time in 2019.
With warm weather and sunny skies, athletes traded rain ponchos for sunscreen and short sleeves on day two. Enerson kicked off the day with another PR in the 300 hurdle finals (41.06) to place seventh. In the 110 hurdles, he faced a headwind and finished in third (15.24). In the 4×100, he closed day two in a similar fashion as day one, by edging a Shanley runner on the homestretch. The team finished in 44.56 to place 8th and reach the podium. Enerson’s 8.25 points lead the team. He finished the season with a team-leading 207.58 points. This is the second consecutive season in which Enerson lead the team in scoring. Over his three-year career, he has totaled 523.33 points, which is #22 All-Time.
Rohloff Vaults to Podium
Junior Kaden Rohloff completed his fine season on Saturday, vaulting 13’6 to place third. After qualifying for state in 2018 but failing to make a height at the meet, reaching the podium was a mission accomplished for Rohloff. His PR of 14’0 at the Region keeps him tied for #2 All-Time at RRHS.
Two Relays Reach Awards Stand
Both the 4×100 (chronicled above) and 4×200 were seeded tenth heading into the state meet. Both relays improved on their seeding and reached the podium Saturday. Like the 4×100, the 4×200 placed 8th with a SB time of 1:33.08. Team members included Topping, Oehlke and juniors Brady Dvorak/Keandre Anderson. In the 4×400, the team of Mohamud Yahye (senior), Anderson, Amit Rasaily (freshman), and senior Jake Arason improved greatly on their seed time of 3:38.01, clocking a SB time of 3:33.42. They placed 11th. In the 4×800, the team of Marcelles Sartwell (senior), Mustafe Abdi (sophomore), Zach Simon (senior), and Arason ran 8:37.05 to place 15th.
Arason Moves to #10
The only other athlete entering the Top-Ten lists at the state meet was Arason, who moved to #10 in the 3200. His time of 9:52.05 was a slight PR and placed tenth. In the 1600, he placed 12th (4:38.82), in front of Abdi (13th-4:39.59) and Simon (17th-4:41.94). Freshman Hunter McHenry (15th-10:04.28) and Simon (16th-10:05.09) also competed in 3200.
Shot Put and Javelin Throwers Compete on Saturday
Seniors Brett Klefstad and Cade Johnson competed in both the shot put and javelin Saturday. Unfortunately, they did not make finals in either event. Klefstad finished 11th in the shot put (47’0), while Johnson placed 16th (45’6). In the javelin, Klefstad placed 16th (153’10), ahead of junior Cole Ogren (17th-153’0) and Johnson (21st-145’0).
Team Scoring
In total, the Riders scored 16 points at the State Meet, which put them in 15th place. Bismarck Century won the meet for the third time in four years.
