Riders win at Sertoma and Eagle Relays

  • April 23, 2017

In contrast to the Dual, the weather at the 2017 GF Sertoma was more akin to a North Dakota track meet in April. Despite cool and windy conditions, the Red River Boys pieced together some strong performances to win the team title over a number of East Region schools Tuesday.

The top point scorer for the Riders was Tyler Enerson, who finished either first (110H/LJ) or second (300H/HJ) in all four of his events. His time of 15.00 in the 110m Hurdles is a new lifetime best and moves him to #8 on the Red River Boys All-Time Performance List. Other double-digit point scores included Carlos Martin (20 pts), Devon Pope (19 pts), George Nyanforh (17 pts), Peter Wysocki (12 pts), and Dalton Byrne (11 pts). Two new events got qualified at the Dual (4x100m Relay, 300mH), while Enerson and Wysocki both bettered their previous qualifying marks in the 110H (15.00-15.48). Enerson (LJ-21’0.5) and Pope (TJ-44’2) also improved jumping marks by small margins.

EAGLE RELAYS

Always one of the most anticipated meets of the season is the Eagle Relays, held at Fargo Davies High School. This meet features a number of relays not normally contested during regular track meets. In the field events, performances from each school are added together to form one team score in each event. In a repeat of last year, Fargo Davies put up a strong fight on their home track but couldn’t overcome the quality of the RR field and hurdle events. The RR Boys edged Davies to win the Eagle Relays team title for the fourth consecutive year. Red River is the only school to have won the meet in its four-year existence.

Coach Delmore’s jumpers scored big points at the meet, with his trio of long (Enerson, Pope, Martin), triple (Pope, Martin, Nyanforh), and high jumpers (Painter, Enerson, B. Enerson) all taking first place. Pope (44’7) and Painter (5’10) both placed first individually in their events. The javelin trio of Ty/Liam Ogren and Sam Schumacher also placed first to lead the throwers.

Two relay school records were set Friday. The rarely contested, yet always exciting, 110m Shuttle Hurdle Relay saw its 2016 record fall. The quartet of Enerson, B. Enerson, Martin, and Wysocki ran 1:03.67, eclipsing the mark of 1:04.25. The octet of Burian, Topping, Brandvold, Kroeger, L Pope, Robertson, Andrade, and Gutterud ran 3:14.59 in the 8x200m Relay to shatter the previous record by nearly five seconds. Other strong performances came from the 4x100m (Topping, Burian, Wysocki, Pope) and 4x200m (Burian, Pope, Topping, Nyanforh), which both ran state-qualifying times (44.91-1:33.58) to finish in 4th place. The 4x800m team of Byrne, Valentine, Sartwell, and Simon all ran strong legs to finish 3rd with a season-best time of 8:33.02, the qualifying standard of 8:24.24 now within reach. Distance specialist Ben Hutchison continues to improve, running 10:07.32 to finish 3rd (just missing the qualifying standard).

Next up for the Riders is the Shanley Invitational on Thursday, April 27th on the campus of Concordia College in Moorhead.
