Riders Close Indoor Season in Bemidji
The 2017 indoor season concluded last week with a trip to Bemidji for the Aurora Borealis meet on the campus of B.S.U. With a chance to see new competition from Northern Minnesota, the Riders piled up points in all areas, placing first in ten different events.
The biggest point haul came in the 200m, where Tyler Burian (23.98), Devon Pope (24.00), Zack Topping (24.66), Ethan Brandvold (25.24), and Riley Benson (25.56) completed a 1-2-3-5-7 RR finish, good for 30 points. Other big events included the 400m, which saw Trevor Binstock win his first race of the year in a team-leading 56.36 seconds. Brett Leake, Pierson Painter, and Alessandro Kroeger also ran well to place 4-5-6. All three 4x400m relay teams placed in the meet, led by the all-senior quartet of Tyler Enerson, Trevor Binstock, Brett Leake, and Peter Wysocki, who finished first.
The indoor season’s bread and butter of jumpers and hurdlers also scored big for the Riders. In the 60m Hurdles, Tyler Enerson (8.43), Peter Wysocki (8.72), and Bryce Enerson (9.56) placed 1-2-6. Tyler also won the long jump (20’6) and placed 3rd in the high jump (6’0), while Peter placed third in the long jump (18’6) and ran a leg on the winning 4x200m relay. In the triple jump. Devon Pope managed to gather some late jump heroics for the second meet in a row to set a new personal best of 46’4.75. The mark broke the meet record by 1.75”, which was set by RR legend Mike Backes in 1998. Carlos Horcacitas-Martin also jumped phenomenally well, with a new personal best of 45’4. Devon and Carlos both sit 2-3 on the RR All-Time list, behind the aforementioned Backes. Triple jump fans can only hope these great battles will continue outdoors.
Another highlight was the 4x200m relay performances of both RR teams. Tyler Burian, Devon Pope, Peter Wysocki, and Carlos Horcacitas-Martin raced to victory in a blazing time of 1:34.83. The time is only .34 seconds from the indoor school record. Finishing in third with another great time of 1:39.45 was the team of Ethan Brandvold, Zack Topping, Riley Benson, and Alessandro Kroeger.
This meet also allowed the discus and javelin throwers to get outside and throw for the first time all season. Seth Hanson and Dusty Martin both impressed in their openers, with solid 123’3-123’0.5 efforts to finish 2-3. Zach Gutterud and Ty Ogren also threw well to finish 4-5. Kishen Patel in the pole vault (12’0) and Nick Stahl in the shot put (45’11) were the other event winners. In the distance events, Dalton Byrne completed his strong indoor season with two second place efforts in the 800 and 1600 to lead the “Rider D-Crew.”
In total, 32 personal records were set at the meet, which is a tremendous testament to the hard work put in by the athletes thus far. All are looking forward to the upcoming outdoor season!
