Delmore Decathlon a Huge Success

  • March 27, 2016

After two days of great efforts, hard work, and fantastic performances, the inaugural running of the Delmore Decathlon was a resounding success for the Red River Boys and Girls Track and Field teams. Athletes were split into one of ten different teams and everyone competed in ten individual events and two team relays. Held over two days, the Delmore Decathlon has been deemed the Ultimate Test of Guts, Glory, and Mental Fortitude. Teams competed for bragging rights and the only trophy fitting for this event:

In a close team battle, Pride (2,836 pts) used a dominating win in the the final event, the Med Ball Relay, to become the first-ever team winner in the Delmore Decathlon. Potato, #blessup, and Trains also surpassed 2,700 points, but it was not enough to match the depth of Pride. Full scoring below:

In the boys individual competition, senior Mo Kamara and junior Devon Pope, both state-runner ups in the 110M Hurdles and Triple Jump in 2015, put on a show for the ages. After the dust settled, Mo edged Devon by a mere three points (559-556 pts) to claim victory. Both athletes displayed phenomenal speed, jumping ability, strength, and agility throughout the competition. Mo bested all other athletes in the 30m Sprint, Standing Triple Jump, and Vertical Jump events, while Devon won the Standing Long Jump, Speed Bounce, and 2-Lap Reversaboard events. Sprint/Hurdle/Jump athletes dominated the Top-10 Places, with Daniel Pierce, Carlos Horcacitas, Alex Holmes, Peter Wysocki, and Tyler Enerson recording strong scores. An eye-opening 5th place finish from 7th grade newcomer George Nyanforh also turned heads.

More important than team and individual winners, however, are the goals of this event. The Delmore Decathlon was created as a team bonding experience for the boys and the girls teams, a tool for identifying talent across event areas, a tool for providing baseline data to compare from year to year, as well as filling the need for an early-season competition. Finally, it’s a fun break from our daily practice routines and something athletes can look forward to early in the season.

Against their better judgement,Coaches Dafoe and Bakke, the lone entrants from the Coach/Alumni team, pieced together 10 events on Thursday. It is still unclear whether or not Coach Bakke had actually moved three days after the grueling event. Plans are already being made and alumni being contacted for next year’s edition, where a Coach/Alumni team plans to reign supreme over all other teams.

Huge thanks to Cold Stone Creamery in Grand Forks for their ice cream donation. It was a perfect way to finish off the event! Also, many thanks to the volunteers and alums who stopped by and helped with timing, set-up, measuring, filming, and event coordination. It could not have happened without you!
