33 Year Classic Drought Ends
For the first time since 1983, the Red River Boys won the storied Orvik/Radke East/West Classic Friday. The meet annually gathers some of the top boys programs in the state a couple of weeks prior to the state meet. Unlike most regular meets, the Classic is scored in a true team format, in which the emphasis is placed on overall team depth. Each school is allowed to enter only three athletes in each event and every competitor scores. With 10 teams in this year’s edition and three athletes in each event, the scoring was as follows:
Individual events: 1st-30 pts, 2nd-29 pts, 3rd-28 pts, 4th-27 pts…29th-2 pts, 30th-1 pt.
Relays: 1st-30, 2nd-27, 3rd-24, 4th-21, 5th-18, 6th-15, 7th-12,8th-9, 9th-6, 10th-3
The Riders delivered in their signature events and ran strong relays to outscore the rest of the field. Starting the meet off on a high note was the javelin trio of Ty Ogren, Seth Hanson, and Liam Ogren. All placed in the Top-6, with Ty throwing a personal best 187’0 to finish 1st. The throw places Ty #7 All-Time in the deep RRHS Javelin Performance List. In the 110m Hurdles, Tyler Enerson (14.88), Peter Wysocki (14.98), and Carlos Martin (16.06) placed 1-2-5. All times were lifetime personal bests, with Wysocki breaking the 15.00 barrier for the first time in his career. Enerson and Wysocki currently sit #8 and #9 on the All-Time RRHS 110m Hurdle Performance List.
The triple jump proved to be the final and most exciting event of the meet. Bismarck junior Dane Allen managed a big personal best in the prelims to land himself in first place. In the finals, all eyes were on Devon Pope and Carlos Martin, the state leaders. Both athletes took back the lead positions with impressive performances, 45’5 for Devon and 45’2.5 for Carlos. Not to be overlooked was George Nyanforh, who managed three 43’ jumps in the finals to finish 4th. The trio is currently ranked 1-2-5 in the state and sit #2, #3, and #7 on the All-Time Red River Triple Jump Performance List.
Relay teams also ran well, with the 4×200 and 4×400 relay teams setting new season bests. In the 4×200, Riley Benson ran a strong lead-off leg in a last minute call-up, only minutes after running the 100. Tyler Burian, Thomas O’Halloran, and Nyanforh also ran strong splits to finish 3rd in 1:32.85. The 4×400 team of Cody Robertson, Nyanforh, Pierson Painter, and O’Halloran ran 3:31.22, good enough for 5th place.
