Three for Three

  • April 24, 2016

The Red River boys won the team title at the Eagle Relays on Friday. The Riders have won the meet the past two seasons as well, making them the only winners in the three-year history of the meet. With a focus on the team aspect of track and field, the Eagle Relays features a number of relays not normally contested during regular track meets. In the field events, performances from each school are added together to form one team score in each event. Fargo Davies put up a strong fight on their home track but couldn’t overcome the quality of the Roughrider’s field events. As a team, Red River won the long jump and triple jump, finished second place in the high jump and shot put, third place in the javelin, and fourth place in the discus and pole vault. On the track, the Riders won the 4x800m Relay, the 3x300m Hurdles team race, and the 4x110m Shuttle Hurdle Relay, setting a new school record in the latter (1:04.25). Second-place finishes came in the School Record setting Distance Medley Relay (1200-400-800-1600), 4x200m Relay (State Qualifying and State Leading Time), 8x200m Relay, 4×400 Relay, and 3x3200m team race. In the highly anticipated 4x100m Thrower’s Relay, the Rider quartet of Ty Ogren, Martin Buchbauer, Russell Dukes, and Carter Buelow technically finished in 6th Place, although no other team received more cheers from the crowd. New State Qualifiers included Liam Ogren in the javelin (22’ PR-165’2), Carter Buelow in the shot put (49’3), and the 4x200m Relay team of Kassim Nsibirwa, Devon Pope, Jaeden Holt, and George Nyanforh. Their time of 1:32.68 currently leads the state.

On Saturday, 28 athletes traveled to Mayville to compete in the May-Port CG Invite. Competing against 15 Class B schools from across Eastern North Dakota, the Rider boys took home the team title on a windy and rainy day. Jake Arason’s win in the 3200m Run was the lone event victory for RR. John Bakizuwabo finished second in the 300m Hurdles, 4th in the 110m Hurdles, and 5th in the triple jump to lead the Roughrider point scorers. Coach Fischer and the throwing crew saw a number of PR’s as they continue to improve rapidly in all three events. Markus Nuelle placed second in the 400m in tough conditions and the 4x400m Relay team of Nuelle, Jordan Robles, Ethan Walker, and Marcelles Sartwell placed third to cap a fun day.
