Riders Finish Runners-Up at State Indoor

  • April 3, 2016

In the best team finish at the State Indoor Meet since 1998, the Red River Boys finished in second place on Friday night, trailing only Bismarck Century. The Patriots are the 2015 defending State Outdoor Team Champions. Depth across all events was once again the story, with hurdlers hauling in the largest point total. Senior Mo Kamara raced to victory in the 60m Hurdles in 8.44 seconds. Peter Wysocki (3rd-8.58) and Tyler Enerson (6th-8.97) rounded out the scoring to pile up 19 points in the event.

Joining Mo as State Indoor Champion was junior Devon Pope, who set a new personal record in the triple jump (43’8.25”) and won the event. After breaking the Freshmen Record in the long jump on Tuesday, Carlos Horcacitas set a new Freshman Triple Jump Record by leaping 40’9.5” and placing 8th. In the long jump, Carlos bettered his record with a 20’9.25” jump and 6th Place finish. Not far behind in 8th Place was Devon, who had multiple 20’+ jumps and a best of 20’7.25”. Mo and Enerson showed their versatility by placing 5th (5’11”) and 7th (5’9”) in the high jump. Junior Alex Holmes jumped 12’6” to finish 3rd in the pole vault and conclude a strong Roughrider showing in the jumping events.

Around the track, junior Ben Hutchison impressed with a 3rd place finish in the two-mile and a new Indoor School Record. After converting the distance to 3200m, his new record time becomes 9:56.48*. Senior Ty Boucher set a new personal best in the mile (4:34.65) to finish 4th and ran 2:08.43 in the 800 to finish 6th. The 4x800m Relay team of Hutchison, Parker Carroll, Byrne, and Tyler Braunhausen each ran new PR splits to finish in 5th place (8:50.57). Highlighted by Braunhausen fighting off a hard-charging Bismarck Legacy team on the anchor leg, the event gained valuable team points against the Sabres, who finished 3.5 points behind RR in the overall team standings. The 4x200m Relay team of Mo, Kassim Nsibirwa, Jaeden Holt, and Pope also ran well and finished 6th in 1:36.40.

Fargo South JV Indoor Meet

Only eleven hours after the State Indoor ended, the future of Red River Boys Track and Field got a chance to show what they could do at the Fargo South JV Indoor Meet. The RR Boys contingent recorded six 1st Place finishes in a strong showing against other EDC JV teams. The 4x200m Relay team of Marcus Nuelle, Riley Benson, Jordan Robles, and Zack Topping (1:42.29) and 4x400m Relay team of Nuelle, Robles, Marcelles Sartwell, and Horcacitas (3:51.80) both won exciting races with great efforts all around.

Nuelle added to his two relay crowns with a win in the long jump (19’3) and Horcacitas placed 1st in the 60m Hurdles (9.33), 2nd in the high jump (5’4) and 3rd in the 60m (7.73). Benson (25.54) and Topping (25.55) finished 6-7 in the 200 while Robles (3rd-58.42) and Sartwell (6th-1:00.26) added scoring depth in the 400m to give great promise to the future of the RR long sprinting crew. Kishen Patel continued to make great strides in the pole vault, tying for 1st by clearing 9’6” before the competition was called due to time constraints.

In one of the most encouraging events of the day, Isaiah Stricker won the 1600m in his first ever distance race. He finished in 5:10.14 with Cole Stenseth closing behind him in 2nd (5:12.76). Thomas Hugo ran well and added a 7th place finish in the event (5:32.10).

Overall, the Red River Boys took home the unofficial team title. Out of 10 teams, the Riders (127.16 pts) outdistanced Fargo North (91 pts) and West Fargo Sheyenne (71 pts) for the top three spots.
